Education
Based on the RA laws “On local self-government in Yerevan”, “On education” and “On general education” the mayor of Yerevan as mandatory powers in the sphere of education shall:
*organize the activity of Yerevan subordinated schools, kindergartens and other educational institutions, the process of their operation and repair;
* in accordance with self-government principle of educational institutions, support the implementation of the state educational policy in the territory of Yerevan;
* fulfill the accounting of pre-school and school age children, ensure their inclusion in educational institutions;
*fulfills other powers established by the RA Law and other legal acts.
The mayor fulfills above-mentioned powers with the assistance of a corresponding deputy mayor, the heads of administrative districts and the head of education department of the City Hall staff.
169 educational institutions function in Yerevan supordination including 144 primary schools, 15 secondary schools, one (N 2) college (5-12 classes function), one evening school for the blind (6-12 classes function), two special schools (N 2, N6 ) for the children with mental disabilities, one special educational complex (N 8) for the children with heavy speech disorders, five craft schools.(Table 1)
In 2008-2010 31 schools subordinated to Yerevan in accordance with the RA Government decrees (14.08.2008. N 958-N, 11.06 N664-N, 06.05.2010 N575-N), received the status of high school and passed to the RA Ministry of Education and Science subordination.
