Public transportation
Transport servicing of the population of the capital is carried out by buses, trolleybuses, minibuses and the Underground. Taking into account the tendency of increasing of transport flows in the capital in the recent years the city authorities adopted the policy of increasing the number of buses in urban route network and reducing in parallel the number of mini-buses.
The following passenger transportation companies are functioning in the system of Yerevan Municipality: "The Yerevan Metro after Karen Demirchyan", "Electric transport of Yerevan", "Yerevan Bus", "Autobus" and "Yerevantrans" CJSCs the activities of which are coordinated by the Department of Transport of the Municipality of Yerevan.

Itinerary network
By the decision of the Mayor of Yerevan N 2911-A dated March 30, 2012 the new itinerary network of regular intra-urban passenger transportation in Yerevan has been confirmed. The aim of this is to reconsider the process of passenger transportation in Yerevan, to reduce definitely the number of mini-buses, to increase the role of the Metro and trolleybuses in the volumes of intra-urban passenger transportation as well as to provide new sufficient bus routes.
76 mini-bus routes (1565 units of rolling stock), 68 bus routes (918 units of rolling stock) and 10 trolleybus routes (108 units of rolling stock) are provided by the new itinerary network. The installation of the new itinerary network is being carried out, in 2012 by the fixed schedule competitions for regular intra-urban bus and mini-bus transportation in Yerevan were held.
All bus routes (68) and mini-bus routed (76) were included in the competitions. Winners have been recognized for 36 bus and 74 mini-bus routes. For the rest routed additional competitions have been announced.

Bus transportation
The bus fleet of the capital includes 578 buses, 42 routes are actually operated and in average 370-380 units of rolling stock come out on routes daily.
The bus routes are served on contractual basis by 13 private companies, “Autobus” CJSC and “Yerevan autobus” CJSC.
To replenish the bus fleet of the capital, in 2012 249 Chinese buses of “HIGER” KLQ6770G model were imported to the capital and 18 intra-urban itineraries are already served by them.
Due to the actions undertaken the number of intra-urban buses has significantly increased, the volumes of passenger transportation carried out by buses have grown in comparison with the previous year. As a whole, in 2012 49,3 million passengers were transported by buses which is more than the previous year by 12,5 million or the growth made up 34%.
Though the specific volumes of passenger transportation by buses has increased (by 5,5% in comparison with the previous year) they still have small share in the total volumes of passenger transportation (about 21%). The efficiency of bus routes operation is still low in Yerevan: because of lack of the required number of buses a number of routes are not served and the other part is served partially.
To ensure regular transportation of the population of the capital, it 's necessary to go on replenishing the bus fleet with buses of urban significance and to reduce in parallel the number of mini-buses. With this aim at the expenses of private companies in the first half of 2013 150 urban buses are to be imported to the capital.
Mini-bus transportation
95 mini-bus routes are actually operated in Yerevan which are completed with about 1900 units of different models. The mentioned routes are served by 43 private companies on contractual bases.
In the recent years because of reducing the number of mini-buses the volumes of mini-bus passenger transportation decreased. However, the major volumes of passenger transportation in the capital are carried out by mini-buses, or about 68,0%.
The quality of mini-bus rolling stock has been definitely improved. Due to competitions held in 2012 minibuses of "GAZEL" model were mainly involved (including 21 new ones), all mini-buses of "RAF" and "YERAZ" models were withdrawn from operation. In spite of improvements recorded in the organization of the mentioned routes the public transport service in the capital mainly by mini-buses is not appropriate thus there is no alternative for reducing the number of mini-buses and their replacement with buses.
6 mini-bus routes have already been eliminated while installing the new itinerary network, 9 routed have been replaced with bus routed another 19 mini-bus routes are going to be replaced with buses thus the volume of mini-bus passenger transportation will decrease and make up about 41%.

Overground electric transport
There are 79 trolleybuses on the balance of «Electric transport of Yerevan» CJSC (1 trolleybus is of technical maintenance), including 9 ones of “Renault” production, 34 of “Scoda” and 36 of “LIAZ” production. The company serves 5 trolleybus routes, on the average, 50-52 units are put on routes daily.
The analysis of the Yerevan overground electric transport in the recent years has shown that the number of passengers using trolleybuses has increased. Particularly, in 2012 the growth by 0,5% has been recorded in trolleybus passenger transportation, 5358,7 thousand passengers have been transported which is 26,6 thousand more than in 2011. However, the volumes of trolleybus transportation are still small in the share of total intra-urban transportation in the capital(about 2,4%).
taking into account the significance of overground electric transport the financing of "Electric transport of Yerevan" CJSC from the RA state budget has been resumed since 2006.
Though the trolleybus fleet wasn't replenished in 2012 certain work has been carried out towards repairing of overground electric rolling stocks, reticular and cable networks, repairing of traction substations, for construction of some new segments of reticular nets, reconstruction and re-operation of traction substations, production and technical re-equipment of trolleybus economy, as well as towards increasing of efficiency of trolleybus operation.

Underground
10 stations are operated in Yerevan Metro, the length of the operated line is 12,1 km, there are 45 wagons. On working days 26 wagons are put into operation and on weekends 24 wagons work (12 rolling stocks).
In the recent years a tendency to stability and growth has been recorded in passenger transportation by underground. In 2008-2009 about 18,9 million passengers used the underground, in 2010 - about 19,0 million passengers. Since July 1, 2011 after increasing the fares from AMD 50 to AMD 100 the volumes of passenger transportation by metro has somewhat decreased, in 2012 this number made up 14,9 million people. The share of transportation by metro in total transportation is 6,7%.
Because of installation of new route network in Yerevan, particularly because of decreasing the number of mini-bus routed since the second half of 2012 the number of passengers in metro has increased. Particularly, in the second half of 2012 8037,6 thousand passengers were transported which is 490,0 more than in the same period of the previous year. The tendency is kept in the current year and this facts gives grounds for optimism.
Significant growth of volumes of transportation by metro will take place only if the existing line is prolonged, new stations are constructed and operated, as well as after installing the new itinerary network of passenger transport.
The program under financing of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is going on and its aim is to make services of the Yerevan Metro safe. The program consists of the following investment compounds: modernization of rolling stocks, repairing of rails, reconstruction of energy supply, modernization of service quality and infrastructures, elimination of water inflows. The total cost of the investment program is 15 million euro.
