Four-year-old Angelina was diagnosed a dilated cardiomyopathy which was incompatible with life. The unprecedented heart surgery performed in Armenia for the first time was made in “Nork-Marash” medical centre. The only way to save the kid’s life was to implant in her an artificial left ventricle. Luckily, the operation has been successful. According to the director of “Nork-Marash” MC Mikael Adamyan, such an operation is unprecedented for the region: it has never been performed in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. This heart disease is rather widespread and becomes fatal for most patients. It is somewhat a bridge to get to heart transplantation. The team of cardio specialists arrived from Europe is ready to assist whenever needed. The surgery was a success and Mr. Adamyan expressed hope that one day heart transplantation will be performed in Armenia.

The many-hour surgery was performed by the cardio surgeons of “Nork-Marash” MC Hrayr Hovagimyan, Gagik Heboyan and a big surgical team. 70% of the amount necessary for the kid’s surgery, USD 70 000 was fundraised within 2 days, the rest USD 30 000 was donated from the state budget.
Actually, the operation was not just a unique one made in “Nork-Marash” but a nationwide effort as many people donated including the Ministry of Health in the person of Arsen Torosyan. The device is rather expensive, USD 100 000. The government assisted in distributing the device to Armenia as soon as possible. Little Angelina is at the Intensive Care Unit of the MC. Her condition is stable.
