The draft decision on granting the flat with the right to free use to the Shaboyan family was approved at the meeting of the Council of Elders held on November 13. The flat with the surface of 34.6 sq m (29/4 Moldovakan street) was given to the family of Virab Shaboyan for 10 years of free use. The family previously lived in the basement of the same building. That basement is state-owned and is not appropriate for residence. Referring to the issue Mayor Hayk Marutyan noted that the housing fund of Yerevan is in such situation that the settlement of rooted problems seems rather difficult. The mayor also stressed the importance of cooperation with the private sector in social housing construction.
“We actually can’t tell everyone to wait for five-ten years till the housing fund is increased and all of you can move to new flats. We must solve these problems step by step. I expect support from the factions in working out the mechanism which will be transparent and acceptable for public. As a result of our cooperation with the private sector we are already working out the mechanism for housing fund increase”, said the Mayor of Yerevan.
