Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory

Yerevan State Conservatoire after Komitas was founded in 1921 first as a musical centre and two days later it was re-arranged into the higher musical educational institution.

The first founder of the Conservatoire was eminent musician, composer and choir conductor, alumnus of Moscow Conservatoire Romanos Melikyan. The first lecturers of the Conservatoire were piano players A. Mnatsakanyan, I. Madatyan, E. Khosrovyan, violinists A. Gabrielyan, D. Soghomonyan, G. Mirza-Avagyan, A. Kotlyarski and A. Ayvazyan.
The subsequent heads of the Conservatoire continued the traditions instilled by R. Melikyan.
Since 2002 the Rector of Conservatoire was the piano player, professor Sergey Sarajyan.
The Conservatoire has a student symphonic orchestra, a chamber orchestra, an orchestra of folk instruments and folk choir, chamber groups: a trio, a quartet, a brass sextet and others.
More than 1000 students study at the departments of the Conservatoire, 120 of which are from abroad.
