In Yerevan: Blue Mosque
There is a cozy Iranian nook in the centre of Yerevan. The Blue Mosque was built in 1766, during the period of Persian dominion. It was reconstructed in 1994-1998. The mosque is not only a place for prayer but also a cultural centre.
“The Blue Mosque is an important cultural tie between Iran and Armenia. It’s not just a spiritual place but also a centre of culture and art. Our intellectuals often visit this place. Conferences, cultural events and art exhibitions are often held here. The mosque is also a touristic centre. In summer, we have 500-600 visitors a day, in winter-up to 200. Our goal is to preserve it both as a historical place and as a cultural centre. Educational programs such as studies of the Persian and Armenian languages are held here as well. A library with rich Iranian literature can be found in the area of the mosque: there are approximately 8000 books in the library”, informs the advisor for culture of Iranian Embassy in Armenia Mohammad Asadi Movahed.
