The final meeting of 2014 of the city commission for the issues of disabled people has been held in the Municipality of Yerevan. The heads of a number of subdivisions and social divisions of the administrative districts of Yerevan, a representative of the road police, members and chairs of NGOs took part in the meeting which was chaired by the First Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Kamo Areyan. According to the agenda, the heads of the responsible departments and divisions of the Municipality reported on the programs implemented in 2014 for the people with special needs. By the instruction of Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan people with disabilities and their families were included in all social, educational, health care and other programs, got financial and food aid. The construction of wheelchair access in the streets and public areas is among those programs. This year the amount disbursed form the community budget for the construction of wheelchair ramps in main and secondary streets has been doubled. Accordingly, 671 ramps were constructed, almost half of them was constructed in newly repaired 25 streets. About 300 ramps were constructed by private companies by the municipality design. In 44 inclusive schools subordinated to the Municipality various initiatives and cooperation programs were realized jointly with NGOs.Cultural events were organized too.
The decision of the Council of Elders according to which disabled people have been freed from parking fees has also become an important social initiative. Special parking places have been separated for the vehicles of people with disabilities. By the end of the year 10 buses are to be equipped with special lifts, 10 more buses –next year. The representatives of NGOs engaged in the problems of disabled people noted that the cooperation with the Municipality is really successful and the realized programs witness it. The leaders of NGOs submitted new proposals which were taken into account. Taking into account the presented reports the chairman of the commission, the First Deputy Mayor Kamo Areyan noted that the programs had been implemented 100 per cent. Kamo Areyan assured on behalf of the Mayor that in 2015 the mentioned programs will be continues and expanded.
