In 2020, press-button pedestrian lights are to be installed in 37 crossings

Ensuring safe traffic is among the city authorities’ priorities. With this aim Yerevan Municipality implemented a number of projects in 2019. One of the projects was to provide pedestrian crossings with press-button pedestrian traffic lights. Taking into account the increased number traffic accidents and the growth of the number of vehicles, the Mayor instructed to inventory and study the problematic hubs and take measures.

In 2009, in accordance with the Government’s decision, the function related to traffic regulation, installation of traffic lights, street marking and so on was delegated to the Road Police. Accordingly, the budget is allotted to the RP. The Municipality cooperates with the RP, provides some budget disburse to assist in the issue of population’s security.

According to the acting head of the Transport Department Edgar Galstyan, the Mayor instructed to set speed limits decreasing them from 70/80 km/h to 60km/h. Besides, 37 more Pedestrian Light Controlled Crossings will be arranged in Yerevan in 2020.

Speaking about the recent fatal accident happened to a 10-year schoolgirl, Mayor Hayk Marutyan particularly said, “Besides studying vulnerable traffic hubs in Yerevan we have to inventory all the schools, kindergartens, other educational establishments and cultural centres attended by children, and make a special list to close these areas. People’s security is our number one problem”.

Next to the press-button pedestrian lights townspeople will soon see crossings furnished with special mannequins. The idea belongs to Buzand Baghdasaryan who offered it via “Active citizen” platform. His idea got necessary votes and will be implemented by the Municipality.
