Mutual Declaration on the Establishment of "Fraternal Ties" Signed Between Yerevan and Marseille
More than 30-year-long partnership between Yerevan and Marseille is poised to enter a new phase. Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan hosted the Mayor of Marseille, Benoît Payan. During the meeting, both mayors emphasized that addressing similar challenges is included in the agenda of bilateral cooperation, noting that the two cities share common issues and a common approach to solving them.
"Interstate relations between Armenia and France are stronger than ever, rooted in the centuries-old friendship and shared values of the Armenian and French peoples. Thus, cooperation and friendship between Yerevan and Marseille are also stronger than ever," stated Mayor Tigran Avinyan. He expressed confidence that the renewed collaboration between the two cities would be distinguished by its effectiveness.
"This declaration defines our common objectives and reinforces a partnership that has endured for more than three decades, built on mutual respect, shared historical memory, and a common vision for sustainable development. Our cities face similar challenges—both in Yerevan and Marseille, we are committed to creating effective, harmonious, and people-oriented urban environments. I am confident that the declaration we are signing today will lay the foundation for a program that goes beyond formality and will become a platform for tangible outcomes and mutually beneficial initiatives. Yerevan remains a reliable partner, actively pursuing constructive cooperation," noted Mayor Avinyan.
In his turn, the Mayor of Marseille, Benoît Payan, emphasized that Yerevan holds a special place for Marseille and highlighted that the declaration paves the way for enhanced cooperation between the two cities.
"Our cities speak to people and humanism; their destinies are intertwined. We will continue to build hand in hand, supporting one another, and strive to advance our joint solutions that will create a bright future for us. This declaration must breathe new life into both Marseille and Yerevan. The survivors of the Armenian Genocide brought to France not only their profound sorrow but also their rich cultural heritage. The Armenian community offers a significant opportunity for both France and Marseille," said Mayor Payan.
The official meeting was followed by a solemn signing ceremony of the Mutual Declaration on the Establishment of "Fraternal Ties." The document, intended to foster the exchange of experiences and reinforce bilateral cooperation, will be followed by the signing of a three-year program that will outline a clear work agenda for Yerevan and Marseille.
