UN Development Program in Armenia is going to show technical support to Yerevan in the preparations for Sustainable Energy Action Plan
The UN Development Program in Armenia (UNDP Armenia) and Yerevan Municipality made a principal agreement concerning providing technical support to Yerevan in the issue of working out and confirmation of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) of the city within the frames of Covenant of Mayors.
The capital of Armenia joined the European initiative on September 9, 2014 undertook the voluntary commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emission by 20% by 2020.
At the beginning of 2015, at the instruction of the Mayor of the city, the special working team was formed which involves the heads of 16 different departments of the Municipality, including Department of Development and Investment Programs, Financial Department, Nature Protection, Communal Services and Transport departments. The main task of the working group is to collect and systematize the source materials necessary for working out the Basic Cadaster for Emissions (BCE) and SEAP, including the data for corresponding urban infrastructures and their energy consumption. Within 6 months the group managed to collect considerable basic information on energy consumption in different sectors of the city economy. However, the systematization and data procession as well as BCE and SEAP working out on their basis require significant efforts with attraction of corresponding specialists in the spheres of energy, transport, housing, nature protection and etc. To provide up-to-date SEAP working out which would correspond to the requirements of the Covenant of Mayors the city administration of Yerevan appealed for technical support to UNDP Armenia as this organization has been Armenia’s partner for many years and in teamwork with Yerevan Municipality they have carried out a number of big projects of energy saving in the spheres of housing and street lighting.
It is expected that the practical cooperation for SEAP working out will start at the end of September 2015, and the first version of SEAP will be prepared and submitted to the discussion of interested parties and confirmation of the City Council at the beginning of 2016.
