Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan together with wife and children took part in the opening of the regular season of Yerevan Zoo. This year one of the most beloved recreation zones of townspeople meets its visitors in completely new, comfortable and modern conditions and facilities. Accompanied by the director Yerevan Mayor walked in the park, familiarized himself with the activities carried out in the zoo within the frames of the second stage of improvement and development program which was already completed. Presenting the Mayor the details the persons in charge said that as a result of the second stage of the work currently big and spacious cages prevail in the zoo providing more natural conditions for animals.
It should be noted that as a result of the work carried out in 2016-2018 two new cages with passages for wolves and bears were put into operation Total area of the cages is 5550 sq m which is 5 times bigger than previously. 2 observation decks were constructed which can place 30 visitors at the same time. The program also involved construction of a new cage for lions with the surface of 2950 sq m, 400 sq m of which are winter shelters for the animals. 2 more observation decks were constructed here which can give a place for 80 people at the same time. A zone for direct communication with animals which is of 1200 sq m was constructed too. Besides, animals quarantine zone was constructed which was highly needed in the zoo. the persons in charge also noted that instead of shabby constructions located on the left of the main road new cages were constructed, improvement, asphalting and landscaping were carried out.
Answering the journalists’ questions Mayor Taron Margaryan reminded that the program of reconstruction and improvement was initiated in 2012. The first stage was finished in 2015 and taking into account the large scale of activities and residents’ excitement Yerevan Municipality initiated the second stage in 2016.
“We consider the zoological garden to be one of the visiting cards of Yerevan and the program we initiated and implemented had a one aim-to make this recreation zone maximally comfortable and corresponding to modern standards. Today I can state with delight that the regular season we start with new more spacious cages and better conditions which will make it possible for visitors to watch animals in more natural environment. Now Yerevan Zoo with modern solutions, better service of visitors and conditions provided for animals corresponds to international norms and becomes a leading center in the region which is open throughout the year. We want to present this successful project to the 2800th anniversary of Yerevan foundation”, said the Mayor.
Taron Margaryan also added that the third stage is also planned which in fact will complete the whole improvement.
“With the third stage we will finish the reconstruction and improvement program of the zoo as a result of which the Republic of Armenia, the capital city Yerevan will have a presentable zoo which can successfully compete with nearly all zoos. We had set a task to enrich the zoo with new animals. I hope that representatives of tourism sphere will guide the guests to Yerevan Zoo too as it has become a favourite place for townspeople and guests of the capital. I must note that the administration of the zoo has been given the opportunity to represent Yerevan on international platforms which will certainly promote cooperation formation and development with different organizations as a result of which experience exchange will be fulfilled and it will become possible to purchase new animals”, said Taron Margaryan.
