One of the streets in the capital will be named after the Yezidi national hero Jahangir agha

Prior to the 98th anniversary of Sardarapat battle, during the regular meeting held on May 25 and chaired by Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan the Council of Elders of Yerevan approved of the draft decision on naming the 4th lane of Shahinyan street in Avan administrative district after the Yezidi national hero Jahangir agha.

To substantiate the necessity of the mentioned above decision it was noted that the Yezidi national hero Jahangir agha together with his soldiers helped many Armenian and Yezidi refugees to escape to Western Armenia during the years of Armenian Genocide. Besides, in 1918, with his squad of 1500 riders he took active part in Sardarapat and Bash-Aparan battles. Jahangir agha continued his struggle in the staff of the Armenian army under the commandership of Drastamat Kanayan. For is courage he for awarded with “Gevorgyan“ cross. It should be noted that a number of Yezidi NGOs nd unions of Armenia submitted their applications in regard of naming the street.
Other issues included in the agenda of the meeting were also approved by the Council. The next regular meeting of the Council of Elders of Yerevan is to be held on June 24.
