During his working visit to Arabkir administrative district Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan visited the school N 14 after N. Tigranyan for the children with impaired vision. Presenting the Mayor the activity of the educational center the persons in charge noted that in parallel with getting education the children attending this school are taught to move and operate in the city by themselves. The Mayor was shown the special tactile paving for blind people installed in the yard of this school which is aimed at warning people with impaired vision about the obstacles on their way: stairs, end of sidewalk and so on. It should be noted that the yellow tactile tiles are widely used worldwide and soon they will be installed in some parts of the capital. As an experimental program, after the discussion with the interested NGOs it was decided to install such paving at the staircase of the entrance to “The culture house of blind people” and in a segment of Tumanyan street. Attaching particular importance to such programs Mayor Taron Margaryan outlined that making the capital convenient for everybody is one of the priorities of Yerevan Municipality activity.
“Within the last three years Yerevan Municipality has developed an active cooperation with the interested NGOs and the results are already noticeable. Besides, for three years we have been disbursing money from the community budget for construction of wheelchair ramps. The main requirement of the competition is the quality of the work so that really comfortable environment will be provided. The supervision is carried out by us in teamwork with all interested organizations. Moreover, I have instructed the Chief Architect to take into account all suggestions during all drafting activities. The final acts after urban development projects are accepted only if they are provided with wheelchair access. Today we are starting a big program for the blind which is to be carried out in all administrative districts. We are trying to make the public transport available for our residents from special groups. However, we should feel satisfied with this-there is still a lot to be done. City authorities clearly understands that his defect existing since the Soviet times must be corrected and we must find solutions to this problem”, stressed the Mayor adding that the Municipality is open for cooperation and is ready to hear out all suggestions and find unified solutions to the problems.
