The RA President, Chairman of the Armenian Chess Federation Serzh Sargsyan together with Yerevan Mayor, the Chairman of Yerevan Chess Federation Taron Margaryan and the President of European Chess Union Zurab Azmayparashvili were present at the ceremony of opening of the international chess tournament “Yerevan open” in the Chess Academy of Armenia. “Yerevan open” which is organized in Armenia for the first time will be held from October 1 to 10. In his greeting speech on the event of the tournament beginning Taron Margaryan wished success to the participants of the tournament noting that holding such tournaments in Yerevan is really a big honour.
“Numerous international festivals, subject Olympiads, tournaments are organized in Yerevan. However, such honourable and awaited international tournaments and championships have their special significance. Many of you have taken part in Yerevan tournaments and remember the 15th European individual chess tournament dedicated to the 9th world chess champion Tigran Petrosyan. And today Yerevan is hosting you, the participants of this international tournament wishing you good luck and high results. Chess is very popular in our country. As you know, in our schools chess is taught as a special subject and our experience has become a model for many countries. Many chess schools are working here, so various tournaments and international games in different age groups are organized.
Dear participants, welcome to Yerevan, enjoy our warm and sunny city. Be sure that our city is always ready to welcome its friends”, said the Mayor of Yerevan and announced the opening of the first international tournament “Yerevan open”.
It should be noted that 140 chess players from 11 countries have applied for participation in the tournament. 23 international grandmasters and 9 international masters are among them.
