Phasing Out Single-Use Paper Tickets with QR Codes from August 1
A unified and modern public transport ticketing system offering four different payment methods is already in operation in Yerevan.
One of these methods, the single-use paper ticket embedded with a QR code, was originally intended for occasional users. However, it has increasingly become common among regular commuters.
Due to frequent issues with QR code legibility, often caused by inconsistent print quality, these tickets are frequently unreadable by validation devices. This results in inconvenience for passengers and creates additional technical and operational challenges, ultimately disrupting the reliable and efficient functioning of the system.
Considering both technological and environmental factors, single-use paper tickets will be phased out on August 1. They will be replaced by more convenient and reliable alternatives: a reusable transport card, contactless bank cards (accepted from all banks operating in the Republic of Armenia, except for VTB Bank), and a mobile application.
Transport cards can be purchased at metro station terminals or ticket offices, at “Telcell” service points, and at the information centers located in Republic Square and France Square.
After obtaining the card, users must attach their preferred ticket package via the transport.yerevan.am website, through “Telcell” terminals, or at “Telcell” service points.
This marks another step toward getting a more comfortable, environmentally friendly, and modern urban transport system.
