Underground Crossing Opposite “Covered Market” Is Open After Renovation

16.02.2023

The underground pedestrian crossing opposite the “Covered Market” has been put into operation after overhauling. To fulfil the project approximately 50 million drams were allotted from the city budget.
The construction was put into operation in the 1970s and used to be neglected for years. Deputy Mayor Tigran Avinyan informed that the city authorities have a program for reconstruction and renovation of underground passages and are gradually implementing it. However, after the renovation the problem of preservation becomes of no less importance. That is why after the renovation the maintenance of underground crossings will be auctioned and passed to private companies.

The Municipality set clear requirements before the companies undertaken the maintenance of the passages. The trade pavilions placed here are to be constructed in a single style, elevators and lavatories are to be provided as well.
It was decided that all underground crossings in Mashtots avenue are to have a single style, so the one located opposite the “Covered Market” has been faced with pressed granite and travertine. The stairs have been covered with basalt slabs.
The persons in charge assure that light and safe conditions will be provided in all underground pedestrian crossings of the city. Negotiations are going on between the community and the private sector to solve this problem step by step.
