Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan met with Professor Yoshihide Sekimoto, Director of the Center for Spatial Information Science (CSIS) at the University of Tokyo. CSIS is one of Japan’s leading interdisciplinary research institutions specializing in spatial data, urban informatics, and smart city development.
During the meeting, Mayor Avinyan presented the reforms being implemented across various sectors of Yerevan’s urban economy and emphasized the city’s strong commitment to digital transformation.
“This means using digital tools to bring innovation to urban governance, improve the transport system and infrastructure, enhance risk preparedness, and ensure that sustainability is embedded in every decision we make. Geographic information systems and spatial data analysis play a paramount role in this process. They enable more effective urban planning and resource management, and significantly improve the lives of Yerevan’s residents,” the Mayor stated, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in achieving these goals.
Professor Sekimoto appreciated the Mayor’s strategic vision for city governance and expressed his readiness to share the Center’s expertise and experience in smart city research to support Yerevan’s development.
