The presentation of the demonstrational project “Energy saving LED system of external lighting in Yerevan” has taken place

The First Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Kamo Areyan took part in the presentation of the demonstrational project “Energy saving LED system of external lighting in Yerevan”. The RA Minister of Nature Protection Aramais Grigoryan and the resident representative of the UNO Development Program office in Armenia, the coordinator of the UNDP Bradley Busetto were present at the presentation of the project which is realized within the frames of the program “Green city lighting” of the Development Program of the UNO. 

About 500 energy saving LED (light emitting diodes) providing external lighting corresponding to modern requirements have been installed in the area from Isakov avenue to Tairov street joining the city center with the airport.
“Green city lighting” is a four-year development pilot project which has been carried out by joint efforts of the Municipality of Yerevan, the Armenian office of the UNDP and the Global Environment Fund as well as other structures.

The First Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Kamo Areyan on behalf of Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan thanked the RA Ministry of Nature Protection and the Armenian office of the UNDP for effective cooperation and for including the city of Yerevan in the program. Kamo Areyan also stressed that Yerevan joined the initiative of the “Covenant of Mayors” and within its powers is obliged to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20 % by 2020”. The next project is to be carried out in the Zoological garden of Yerevan where the external lighting system will be completely renewed.
The installation of the new system provides 63 % energy saving and will make it possible to save about USD 45.000 annually and to reduce gas emissions by 220 tons.
