The Tamanyan’s idea of “North-South” axis layout of Yerevan got its image in the 1970s due to architects Jim Torosyan, Sargis Gurzadyan and Aslan Mkhitaryan. According to the draft, Kentron was to get connected with Arabkir and Zeytun simultaneously turning the “Cascade” complex into a unique educational and cultural centre.
According to Aslan Mkhitaryan, their draft included an escalator connecting Azatutyan monument to Tamanyan’s square. After the earthquake of 1988 the project was stopped.
In the 1990s no work was done at the “Cascade”. In 2002, an agreement was made with the benefactor Gerard Cafesjian with the aim of restoration of the complex.

In 2002, by the decision of Yerevan Mayor, the unfinished area of “Cascade” complex was given to “Cafesjian Museum” foundation with the right of property. Cafesjian’s idea was exceptional: he intended to improve the area, to put into operation the escalators and to use the centre with cultural functions.

In 2009, the improvement was over, the Centre of Arts was opened, however, the “Cascade” was still unfinished. The area rising from Cascade to Azatutyan avenue is neglected today.
No final decision has been made regarding the unfinished area and no investments have been made by the owner.

Today the community takes steps to complete the construction. At the beginning of the year Mayor Hrachya Sargsyan instructed to restart the negotiations with “Cafesjian Museum” foundation.

According to Mery Harutyunyan, deputy head of the Department of Development and Investment Programs of Yerevan Municipality, the city authorities offered to work out and implement an investment program in teamwork with the foundation to improve this important for the city area.
Currently, the Board of Trustees of the foundation is discussing the suggestion.
