12 more streets in Yerevan will become safer for pedestrians. The municipal program of installing traffic lights with pedestrian call buttons is carried on.
Safe traffic in the capital is among the priorities of the city authorities. To find the solution to the problem, in 2019 by the instruction of the Mayor of Yerevan a number of programs were implemented and one of them is arrangement of crossings.
Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan stressed that population’s safety particularly that of kids is number one problem.
The head of Yerevan Municipality Department of Transport Edgar Galstyan informed that last year there were 28 problematic crossings where they installed traffic lights with pedestrian call button and this year 14 more similar traffic lights have been installed in 12 streets. By the end of the year it is planned to install 63 more traffic lights.
The goal of the program is to reduce the number of traffic accidents. To implement the program the problematic junctions of the capital were studied in teamwork with the Road police.
Such traffic lights are mainly installed near educational establishments, cultural and sport centres as well as adjacent to medical institutions.
According to specialists, the difference is already noticeable: the number of accidents is reduced.
Within the frames of complex programs aimed at having a safe city in 2020, the Municipality of Yerevan provided 100 pedestrian crossings with night illumination. Besides, by the Mayor’s instruction the crossings at the roads with three and more lanes have been inventoried. Speed limit has been set in those areas.
Arrangement of traffic in the capital has been among the liabilities of the Road police since 2009, however the community carries on implementation of various programs aimed at saving human’s lives.
