The main part of books in community-owned libraries of Yerevan has been handed downs from generation to generation. Unfortunately, some of them are impossible to be restored.
By the Initiative of Yerevan Municipality, in the last few years, significant amounts have been allocated from the budget to enrich the book fund: generally, 7400 books of 262 names are to be distributed to Yerevan libraries.
According to the Mayor’s opinion, replenishment of the book fund will benefit to more active life of libraries. Some other changes are also planned in the sphere so as to attract more kids and grown-ups to libraries.
The new books are illustrated and printed in Yerevan publishing houses. Mayor Hrachya Sargsyan together with his first deputy Levon Hovhannisyan visited the publishing houses and familiarized themselves with the process and the literature to be handed to the libraries.
As Levon Hovhannisyan marked, this year more than 20 million drams were disbursed for procurement of books for 19 municipal libraries. Next year, replenishment of book funds will also be accounted in the budget.
Mayor states that the love for books should be instilled since childhood. The youth is attracted by new, bright-coloured and interactive books. Unfortunately, libraries don’t have many of them. The city authorities think that pre-schools should be replenished with such books as well.
Soon book lovers will be able to enjoy new projects and publishing of new books. Besides replenishment and enrichment of the book fund, the city authorities plan to modernize the libraries.
The city libraries are a part of Yerevan cultural life. The Municipality plans to use modern technologies to increase the interest in community libraries turning them into comfortable centres where young people can spend their time in comfort and enjoy reading.
