The Yerevan Sayat-Nova Music School is one of the oldest music education institutions in Armenia.
The school was founded in 1934 on the initiative of Varduhi Zakaryan as a music studio. Varduhi Zakaryan also became its first director.
In 1940, the studio was reorganized into a seven-year music school with approximately 200 students. In the same year, the school was named after the renowned Armenian poet and ashugh Sayat-Nova, and Raisa Sarkisova was appointed director.
In the following years, a string orchestra was established, led initially by Raisa Sarkisova and subsequently by Yu. Davtyan, G. Harutyunyan, A. Soghomonyan, S. Chernyshev and S. Petrosyan. A wind instruments department and a composition class were also established. The composition class, founded in 1948, was taught by composers E. Hovhannisyan, G. Hovunts, Ts. Bekaryan and A. Satyan.
In 1970, the school established its violin ensemble, which over the years was led by Ruben Poghosyan, People's Artist of the Republic of Armenia Gevorg Achemyan, Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia Ruben Altunyan, Arakel Petrosyan and Tigran Padaryan. The school's choirs have been conducted by Emma Arzumanyan, Hovhannes Veranyan, Artur Veranyan, Zhirayr Altunyan, Gayane Baghdasaryan, Irina Hovsepyan, Hermine Yeghiazaryan, Nairi Partagjian, Lunara Hambardzumyan, Maria Galstyan and Manuel Ohanyan.
In 1950, Satenik Aslamazyan was appointed director of the school. In 1959, the school moved into a new, well-equipped building with large and small concert halls and approximately 40 classrooms. From 1967, the school was headed by Petros Haykazyan.
Over the course of its history, the Sayat-Nova Music School has educated approximately 5,000 graduates. Among them are distinguished musicians, Honored Artists of the Republic of Armenia, and laureates of international and Transcaucasian competitions, including Svetlana Navasardyan, Barsegh Tumanyan, Hasmik Papian, Tigran Hekekyan, Sergei Babayan, Karine Ohanyan, Susanna Martirosyan, Emin Aristakesyan, Gagik Hovunts, Ruben Matevosyan, Raisa Mkrtchyan, Eduard Topchjan and many others.
From 2003 to 2024, the school was headed by Tigran Hekekyan. Under his initiative, the school's wind orchestra was established, followed by the National Instruments Ensemble in 2007.
Since 2024, the school has been headed by Garik Nazaryan.
Today, approximately 500 students study at the school. Its departments include piano, strings, national instruments, wind and percussion instruments. The school also has a chamber orchestra, a violin ensemble, junior, middle and senior choirs, percussion and national instrument ensembles, as well as a wind ensemble and wind orchestra.
